Firehouse: DCTV's Cinema for Documentary Film

In 2022, DCTV celebrated its 50th year with the opening of Firehouse: DCTV’s Cinema for Documentary Film, a dedicated space where filmmakers and film lovers can come together in appreciation of nonfiction cinema—making it one of a few of its kind in the world. Housed in DCTV's beloved landmarked building in New York City's Chinatown, the 67 fixed-seat theater is Academy qualifying and ADA accessible, boasting 4K projection, 7.1 surround sound, interactive features to connect audiences worldwide, with concessions and an adjoining event space. Firehouse currently features theatrical premieres and curated programs.
  • DCTV’s ornate building, the historic Engine Company 31 firehouse, was built in 1895 by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons to resemble a French château. It is a designated NYC Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Firehouse Cinema is just one part of DCTV, a unique nonprofit media arts organization working at the intersection of education, production, and exhibition of documentary films. DCTV has been one of the nation’s preeminent communities of and for documentary filmmakers since 1972.

DCTV's mission is to create lasting access and representation in documentary filmmaking, and inform and empower communities of all ages and backgrounds to think critically, pursue truth, and create content that sparks social change. In a time marked by misinformation and deepening social divides, we aim to cultivate a more informed and connected public through media literacy, storytelling, and civic dialogue. We break down the financial and cultural barriers that make documentary film inaccessible to many people, providing free or affordable training and resources to all.
